I’ve always believed that fashion is where you find it, which is the conclusion I came to as a street photographer–turned–fashion–photographer. Today, I took my new Canon 6D out for its first street fashion spin and ended up on the bus to go across town to my noontime appointment. While on the bus and crossing through the center of Seoul, a very sharp and well dressed woman sat down in the seat in front of me. She struck me as not only really sharp and fashionable, but also as representative of the kind of fashion sensibilities young women in this city have: stylish and pretty without even looking like they’re trying. As luck would have it, it turned out that we were getting off at the same stop at Shinchon rotary, which is where Yonsei University is, and a popular stop for young trendy people who are going to be out doing something on a weekday afternoon. The standard thing I decided to do I do in trying to make street fashion portraits and stopped her while introducing myself as a street fashion photographer and giving her my business card. As is often the case, she was a little taken aback and hesitant to pose for stranger, especially a foreign male one. I was pretty disappointed to not be able to get her in a full, high quality close with my flash and the advantage of time. However, I just trucked on and decided to walk around the Rotary area up to the campus and back, since I had arrived at my appointment nearly 50 in its early. As luck would have it, my luck had not run out completely since I ended up walking past the selfsame girl as she was standing in front of the McDonald’s, which is probably most common meeting place in the area, and made a lot of sense. So, I took advantage of the new camera’s silent shutter mode and decided to make a couple passes past her and see if I could get high quality street fashion pose anyway. I’m glad to report that between the new camera’s. full frame resolution and silent continuous shutter mode, plus a bit of my own skills as a street shooter, I was able to get her posing with her full outfit and the best of the accessories that have caught my eye when I first saw her standing getting ready to get off the bus.

You’ll notice that I have 2 main full body shots of her, and was happy to see that she was wearing quite large and oversized sunglasses, which neatly masks her identity enough for me to conform with the Korean law about the right of privacy of one’s facial image. Still, even though I had gotten the great frontal shot of her on the 1st pass, I still wanted to get a shot of one of the things that made her stand out as a truly trendy fashionista, which was her set of Beats headphones by Dr. Dre and of course her Prada bag. The high resolution of the camera allowed me to make very high resolution and clear blowups of her major fashion points, and allowed me to turn 2 pictures into a column entry unto itself.

One thing that I noticed about young women in Seoul in their 20s is the fact that there is such a high frequency, in any given place, of very fashionable young women who are dressed to impress or even dressed to kill almost anywhere you go, and this includes the intercity bus. And it seems that only in Seoul, Korea much you come across such a chic an extremely trendy yet truly stylish and fashionable young lady who hits all the marks that typify Korean fashion in one fell swoop.

Women in the capital city of Seoul are known for taking extreme care to look very good, and this woman in particular was typical- to–the–point–of–cliché ( $400 beats headphones, Prada bag, ultra-tight, painted on slack, and Korean–style stockings in open-toed sandal heels) even as she stood out in extremely sharp relief from the humdrum in the way that she put together. In a word, she just struck me as looking extremely sharp, And I was really happy to be given a second chance to record her look for the magazine and present it to you here.
